We left Boise at 8:30am on Thursday, August 27th. We anticipated our trip taking us approximately 5 ½ hours. Boy were we in for a surprise!
The first two hours went smoothly. Brant and I were together in the big truck, while Dale and Martha drove the car with Maddie and Tucker. Just as Brant was singing away to Bob Marley’s, “No Woman, No Cry”, we felt the truck start to sway. It took us both off guard and was quite scary! I thought we had blown a tire because of the way we were moving. Brant safely brought the truck over to the shoulder and we investigated the situation for a minute. Dale decided to drive the truck with Brant and I switched over to drive the car with Martha. After a phone call to Penske, Brant and Dale headed for Salt Lake City (which was not a destination for our day), to the nearest repair shop. Martha and I headed toward Ogden, to our friends, Kaytee and Glendon’s house.
Prior to splitting up, however, we made a quick stop at a nearby “café” because Maddie was fussy and we were getting a little hungry. When we stopped, I found out that Maddie had “blown out” of her diaper. I entered the place and headed straight for the bathroom. Unfortunately for me, it was a unisex bathroom, with no doors. That’s right, folks! I had to change my baby girl in a disgusting bathroom while the truckers were coming in for a pit stop in the same room. To make matters worse, there was no door on the one stall that was in the room. After the first man left, a woman came in and was quite alarmed that there was no door. I promised her I wasn’t paying any attention, but she was still on edge about the situation. A few more men came trickling in and I simply told them to do what they needed to do. I had a baby laying naked on the countertop that I needed to take care of, no matter what the environment was like.
I found out shortly after I left the building that there was a sign on the front door that read: “CAUTION: Baby rattlers on display.” (as in, baby rattlesnakes). And I also found out as they were taking Tucker out to sniff around in the grass, there was another sign that read: “WARNING: Grass is poisonous to dogs and will cause illness or death.” Good grief, right?! Yeah, we left that place in a hurry! And without any lunch for us!
Long story short, Brant and Dale had the truck looked over and inspected carefully. Although there was nothing discovered as to what the problem was, whatever they did seem to do the trick. Martha and I made it to Ogden around 3:30. Brant and Dale made it around 6. Although the time frame was a bit skewed, we all had a wonderful time with our gracious hosts (thanks again, you two!!). Tucker even had a great time with their 6 month old puppy, Duncan. It was really fun to see him wrestle, chase and play with Duncan all evening. He had a little too much fun, apparently, because in the middle of the night, Brant and I woke up to Tucker whining. When I finally went to get him out and take him outside (which never happens in the middle of the night), I discovered that he had been sick in his crate. Yuck! We had only been asleep for 3 hours and only had a few more left before we would be waking up again, and now we had to deal with this mess. Let’s just hope Tucker had a little upset tummy, and didn’t get poisoned from the “crazy grass”. Regardless of all the events that took place, we had a great time with Glendon and Kaytee and look forward to their New Jersey visit in the future!!
What a day this was. One for the log, that’s for sure!
